Stray or Feral?
Stray cats are those who are lost, wandering, or sometimes abandoned. They are friendly house cats who are adaptable and able to be rehomed to indoor living. Feral cats are unsocialized and would rather be outdoors. They have often reverted to some degree of wild state
What is TNR?
Trap-Neuter-Return is the humane, effective approach to addressing community cat populations. Through TNR cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered and vaccinated. They are then returned to their outdoor homes where they live and thrive, ending the cycle of producing new litters of kittens.
Eartipping
With TNR the tip of one ear is typically removed while the cat is under anesthesia so that future volunteer trappers can tell from afar if a cat has already been altered.

The only difference between the friendly cat on your lap and the “feral” cat outside is socialization. A feral cat is a cat that has reverted in some degree to a wild state. They might have been domestic cats that were lost or abandoned and then learned to live in environments with little human contact, such as in barns or abandoned buildings. Or, they could be the litters of these cats. In most cases, feral cats are not completely wild because they still depend on people. It could be a farm family or a caretaker who provides daily food. Or it could be a dumpster outside a restaurant or a garbage can outside a home where they can forage. Relatively few feral cats subsist only by hunting.
